Local Collegiate Teams Open The Season

By CEVA, 08/24/23, 10:30AM PDT

The collegiate volleyball season is kicking off and several teams in our region are starting with high rankings in their respective divisions.

The University of Oregon was ranked #9 in the AVCA/Taraflex preseason coaches poll published on August 15.   The Ducks start with a stern test, on the road in Hawaii from August 25-27, opening their season with 2022 National Semifinal participant #13 San Diego.  They play Northwestern and host Hawai’i to close out the weekend.  Hawai’i received votes in the preseason poll.  Oregon’s preseason schedule also includes Minnesota, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, James Madison, and Marquette, all of whom were mentioned in the preseason poll.

In the NAIA, three local teams are in the first poll of the year, including Corban University at #2, Eastern Oregon at #3, and Southern Oregon at #20 to start the year.  Corban started the year with a 3-1 record at the Raider Invitational in Ashland last weekend.  They travel to Fremont, NE this weekend to take on three Top-10 teams at the Midland Showdown.

Eastern Oregon swept four matches last weekend at the Big Sky Challenge in Butte, MT, including wins over the #10 and #18 teams in the country.  They travel to Honolulu this weekend to play three more tournament matches before opening the conference season the first weekend of September at home.

Southern Oregon hosted a tournament to open the season and came away with a 3-1 record, including a win over #25-ranked Jessup.  They travel to Atherton, CA this week for four more tournament matches prior to their conference opener on September 1.

Linn-Benton Community College is coming off a 34-1 season and will open their season this weekend with four matches.

The region looks forward to supporting all our local collegiate teams this season and all of the players from CEVA playing in college.  To see of a list of those players, click here.  To see a map of local colleges from the AVCA, click here.
