BEAVERTON, OR (1/17/2025) – The Columbia Empire Volleyball Association has announced a partnership with the Center for Active Women, with the goal of bringing education and awareness to topics surrounding women’s health.
Portland native Greta Jarvis, MS, MPH is delighted to bring the education and resources to the CEVA community that she wishes she and her teammates had growing up. As the founder of the Center for Active Women, the heart of her work is to equip women and girls to build peaceful and confident relationships with food, body, and movement. This is her story.
In 2017, at age twenty-four, diagnostic bone imaging revealed osteoporosis in Greta’s hips and spine. Seemingly no risk factors foretold this jolting diagnosis: she was a competitive high school and college athlete who performed weight-bearing exercise, was never “underweight,” and did not have an eating disorder – the bone scan occurred at her request following rigorous self-study of the “exercise-induced amenorrhea” (missing periods) she believed ordinary for nearly a decade. Not one medical professional, dietitian, coach, trainer, or fellow athlete gave her reason to suspect that her condition was anything more than an invisible (in)convenience.
Today, Greta is working to change that. The Center for Active Women is the culmination of eight years of focused study, including a Master of Science in Nutrition, a Master of Public Health in Health Promotion, and certifications as an Integrative Health Coach and Intuitive Eating Counselor. As a high school lacrosse coach and athlete herself, Greta stays connected to the extraordinary opportunities and specific obstacles impacting women in sport today.
From customized workshops, classes, and lectures to one-on-one coaching and consultation, the Center for Active Women equips students, parents, coaches, teachers, athletes, schools, teams, and organizations to navigate and prevent the all-too-common realities of under-eating, disordered eating, body image disturbances, and hormonal imbalances.
