ATHENAVB 17-1 Gold won the 17s American Division championship at the 2023 USAV 14-17s Girls’ Junior National Championships on July 6th in Chicago, capping a strong showing by several region teams at this summer’s championship events.  The championship is believed to be the first for the region in its modern history.

Athena’s 17s team, coached by Remi Pourrat and Matthew Thomas, went 9-2 on the tournament, culminating with three consecutive wins on the final day in the Gold Bracket.  They beat Arizona Storm 17 Thunder in the championship match, who was undefeated going into the last day and had lost only two sets all tournament.  Arizona Storm was the #1 seed going into competition.

CEVA sent 19 teams to Chicago to compete.

NPJ Salem 16 National finished tied for 3rd in the 16s USA division, losing in the Gold bracket semifinals to eventual runner-up Texas Advantage (TAV).

In the 16s Freedom Division, OJVA 16-1 Gold finished 11th out of 48 teams and won 7 of their 10 matches in the tournament.

In mid-June, five CEVA teams competed in Minneapolis at USAV’s 11-13s Girls’ Junior National Championships.  NPJ Portland 13 National finished 13th out of 64 teams in the 13s American Division.

At the end of April, five additional girls’ 18s teams went to Columbus to compete in the USAV 18s Girls’ Junior National Championships.  NPJ 18 Forefront, competing in Open, turned in possibly the highest finish by a CEVA team in the Open Division the region has seen, finishing 9th out of 48 teams.

While competition in Chicago was happening, four CEVA boys’ teams were in Salt Lake City to compete in the USAV Boys’ Junior National Championships.  Rip City Volleyball Academy 14s finished 9th in the USA Division after earning an At-Large bid, and Chaos Boys 18 National finished 5th out of 29 teams in the 18s USA Division, also after earning an At-Large bid from USAV earlier in the Spring.
